Dear Parents:
We want to update you on the recent development in Rhode Island
regarding the mycoplasma infection which has warranted the closing of
schools in Warwick, West Warwick and Coventry. The Rhode Island
Department of Health, in conjunction with the Center for Disease Control
(CDC), has been in communication with the Providence School System. This
information has been shared with our school.
To date, there has been no reported case of mycoplasma in any other
city or town in Rhode Island. We are monitoring our absenteeism, as
requested by the Rhode Island State Department of Health, by reporting
on a daily basis any cases of pneumonia in our student population. If we
have not heard from a parent the morning of a child’s absence, the
school will contact the home to learn the reason for a student’s
absence. Please keep in mind that a child should not be in school if any
of the symptoms listed below. We appreciate your cooperation while we
are diligent in protecting all students.
It is important to remember that mycoplasma is a common bacteria and
that the majority of people recover without any treatment. It is
commonly associated with “walking pneumonia.” Your primary physician
will know and understand the symptoms of this common bacteria. We want
to inform our parents of steps that they can take to prevent illnesses
in general:
-
Parents and children should wash their hands frequently with
antibacterial soap and cough and/or sneeze into the crook of one’s
elbow to prevent the spread of bacteria.
-
Call or visit your doctor, especially if you see a combination of
the following symptoms for mycoplasma (walking pneumonia): fever,
coughing and shortness of breath.
-
Parents should also watch for a combination of symptoms of
meningitis/encephalitis including moderate to severe headache,
disorientation or confusion, fever and neck stiffness. Call your
doctor immediately if you observe any of these symptoms.
Attached is additional information from the Rhode Island Department
of Health regarding mycoplasma pneumonia. If you have further questions
or concerns, please contact Linda Freitas at 751-2470 x18.
Sincerely,
Dani Steiner
Head of School
