Summer "Math
Packet" for Incoming Fifth Graders
Dear Almost Fifth Grade
Families,
Summer is a time of
great fun and we don’t want to bog children
down. Still, even the occasional use of the
“math muscle” will go a long way! Imagine
how you feel after your first hike or run in
a while, and the difference you notice after
only a few repeat performances. With that
said, the following “work,” which really
looks like a lot of fun, is meant to be
scattered throughout the summer, not just
the week after school is out and the day
before it begins again.
It is expected that
students entering fifth grade will know
their multiplication facts with ease and
will be able to compute accurately using
long division. That should be a priority
this summer for those who have not fully
mastered these skills. Please contact me if
you are interested in recommendations for a
math tutor.
The following websites
have a wide assortment of challenging, fun,
and grade appropriate math games. Students
entering fifth grade should make a plan with
their parents as to what makes the most
sense for them. Some may be away at camp
most of the summer, and may choose to play
math games for ten minutes a few times a
week when they are home. Others may prefer
an hour once or twice a week. Each child
should make his/her own decision, with
family input, based upon his/her math
ability and/or needs. Again, those still
uncertain of their multiplication facts
should focus on those.
Additionally, talk to
your child about math. It is everywhere! You
know what areas your child may need to work
on. Encourage your child to make word
problems when you’re out in the world. This
could be a fun beach activity. For example,
if there are two people flying kites every
ten feet on a ninety-foot stretch of beach,
how many kites are in the air? A stick and
the sand can be your paper and pencil!
Again, making up word problems in the world
will vary with each family. Maybe you’ll do
this once a week, or maybe just once over
the summer.
Please contact me if you
have any questions. This information will be
posted on the JCDS website, for your
convenience with accessing the games. Thank
you so much for your support! Have a
wonderful summer.
B’Shalom,
Jamie Faith Woods
