Projo editorial from JCDSRI
alumni Jonathan L. Snow THE WORLD
REACTED in horror the other week as video spread over newscasts and the
Internet of beloved children’s character Mickey Mouse being used to
incite Palestinian children to hatred and violence. As international
outrage grew over this desecration of the beloved cultural icon, the
Palestinian minister of information, a member of the Hamas-led coalition
government, ordered the program, which airs on Hamas’s al-Aqsa
television network, to be shut down. Hamas has responded with contempt,
assuring NBC News that it will keep broadcasting the show as it is.

Jewish Voice:
Community
School
gets $1.2 M
to revamp programs, facility
A sometimes contentious board meeting
held at the Jewish Federation of R.I. (JFRI) on June 26 resulted in
another major victory for the Jewish Community Day School (JCDS), which
received approval for $1.2 million over five years for facility and
programmatic upgrades. The funds are not without strings attached,
however — the school must raise $3.6 million on its own and increase
enrollment from 180 to 300 students during the same time period. A
review occurring at least once annually was also a condition.

JCDS plan takes shape: Forum
focuses on philosophy, prayer, tuition
By Jonathan Rubin
PROVIDENCE — It’s your son’s 10th birthday, and you want to take his
class to a bowling party on a Saturday afternoon. There’s just one
thing: there are kids in his class that don’t go bowling on Shabbat. Do
you change the party for these kids, or hold it anyway and exclude them?
This challenge is actually one of the benefits of having a
multi-denominational Jewish Community Day School (JCDS), said incoming
head Dani Steiner. “To think about how to be with someone that is
different from you — this is a tool for life,” he said.

Open Forum Series
The JCDS-RI Education Excellence Committee thanks all participants in
our four-part Open Forum series about the future of our school. Your
participation was essential to our understanding of the central
principles that characterize and animate our school.
Hosted by the JCDS-RI Education Excellence Committee and facilitated
by Rabbi Alvan Kaunfer, Dani Steiner and Bill McCarthy, community
members, JCDS-RI parents, students, faculty and staff participated in
this four-part conversation. Over two hundred people attended these
forums! They offered their feedback, expertise and commitment to
excellence in education.
The strength of our vision lies in the power of Klal Yisrael – the
degree to which we foster a community that welcomes and nurtures every
Jewish voice. In this series, we began to establish that vision.
