 WELCOME CLASS OF 2017

We warmly welcome our enthusiastic PreK students: Annabelle Doyle, Eli Harris, Steven Katzman, Aaron Landry, Eli Landry, Micah Levanos, Michaela Schulman, lan Shabashevich, Solomon Silvia, Adam Simler, Emily Sorkin, and Ofir Steiner. When asked what they liked about school their responses included: making pasta in the sand table, washing our hands, having fun, making food in our kitchen, playing nicely, reading, the playground, the scooters in gym and going home.

Remembering...

I used to think that Middle School was scary with all the big people and that long hallway upstairs. But now I am in Eighth Grade and know that it isn't that scary. In fact Middle School is fun and exciting especially on your first day in Sixth Grade. Although what I really remember about our school is when I was in Lower School. In Kindergarten I remember having Mrs. O'Hare and everyone always wanting blue lollypops. In First Grade I remember all the fun we had sitting in that little circle and the day the "new boy" came. Second Grade was exciting because we got a new teacher, Ms. Myers, and had Morah Adler and her marble jar. Third Grade with Mrs. Davis, Gladys, and Rina was in the air-conditioned "mods" where we enjoyed our ticket rewards store. Fourth Grade was a fun Red Sox year with G'veret Kaunfer and Mrs. Sugarman. Fifth Grade with Mrs. Woods and Rina was an intense reading and writing year and my last year in Lower School. Although people have come and gone from my class, overall my ASDS/JCDS of RI school years have been fun and exciting. From the Head of the School

Excerpts from September 7, 2007 letter
Dear Parents,

I am proud and excited to begin the 2007-2008 school year, my second as Head of School. School is first and foremost a place for learning. Students learn about the world surrounding them from many sources. They learn about themselves, their abilities, their identities and their function as part of a team.

The adults at the school are also learning. It is written in the mishna, Avot (4:1): "Ben Zoma taught: Who is wise, one who learns from all persons. As it is written: from all my teachers have I gained understanding." The Hebrew word that is used here for teachers is Melamdai מלמדי (the one whom I learned from), and not Morai מורי (my teachers) or Rabanai רבנים (my Rabbis), meaning anyone can teach me something - even a small child. At JCDS RI, we attempt to teach with an open mindedness that allows us to listen and learn from our students as well.

Judaism is a culture of learning. To be a Jew is to value learning and through that to develop yourself into a better person. I hope this year will be a growing year full of learning for all of us. We, as parents, should consider ourselves learners. By modeling good learning, and by being open to new ideas and new approaches, we will most likely become better parents.

Shanah Tovah Tikateivu v'Teichateimu
Happy New Year, and you should be Written

Welcome back to JCDS from the Admissions office!  We've been working hard all summer preparing for a productive admissions season, and we've kicked the year off with a few wonderful events.  Thanks to all of our terrific volunteers for helping out.  Sixth-grade homeroom teacher, Lisa Bergman along with Marissa Garber (Sandy '14 and Joey '16) and new JCDS parents, Lenore Martin and Ruth Ribner (Leah '15) helped make our JCDS booth a huge success at the Lower East Side community festival in Lippitt park on August 26th.  The JCDS opening day celebration was a big hit thanks in part to our parent band, Cliff Bromberg (Josh '11 and Jake '16), Steven Stein (Eve '11, Emmett '13 and Ruth '16) and to alumni parent Howie Bromberg (Scott '89 and Matthew '92)!  Our committed parent body is a large part of what makes our community so special.  Wishing all of you a shana tova u'metuka, a happy and sweet new year from the admissions office. Naomi Stein.

flowers

Please join our efforts to "beautify" the school. We are a newly formed committee independent of the PA with the stated goal of beautifying the school grounds. Our first successful project was painting the games in the parking lot and adding flowers to the front fence. We are ready to move on to more projects.

Our goal for the fall is to install a climbing structure on school grounds for older children. We need your input to identify a product and help raise funds to make this happen. We are open to more suggestions. Please call Laura Mernoff at 527-3925 mernoff@cox.net  or Ayelet  Koren at 270-0502, or akoren1212@gmail.com

Alumni News
Jay Rodrigues '03 was featured in Type A+, High School High Achievers, in the September issue of the RI Monthly. RI Monthly Jay attended high school at the Wheeler School, where he took three advanced placement courses, did a documentary about the theater audition process, was president of the school's athletic association, initiated a field day with a community service requirement, and received  the Spirit Giveth Life Award for compassion, integrity and academic achievement. His SAT scores were 720 in math, 730 in reading and a perfect 800 in writing. Interested in a career in business, he did a summer internship at Citizens Bank in Boston. Jay received early admission to Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is now a freshman.

Steven Jablow, MS Coordinator, reflects, "You knew when you dealt with Jay that this was a kid going places. If you were on the basketball court, he'd be out there working as hard as anyone. If you were in class, he was on the money, always active and insightful. If you were dealing with a community service issue or the Jewish values behind a holiday or practice, he was always first to jump in and help out. So we all wish Jay continued success in his exciting endeavors, and no, we are not surprised to view his accomplishments already!"
