Dear Friends

I am still excited from last evening's beautiful event. So many people approached us yesterday and this morning sharing their excitement. I would like to again thank, all the people that made this evening so successful, especially the students. Also, I want to say a special thank you to the 8 grade parents especially Andrea Gouze and Elisa Heath for preparing the silent auction. This excellent work is part of our fund raising efforts toward the 8th grade trip to Israel. There are still multiple ways to support this amazing mission!

I also would like to personally say goodbye to Eileen Ellis. She was a part of this school for 15 years. During this time, she assisted 5 different heads of school. Eileen had a major part in helping us to become an institution of excellence. I wish you Eileen a smooth transition and a lot of success.

To all of our students and families I wish a great vacation with a lot of precious time together.

Dani

Purim Contest!
Adar......Our Door
The  Hebrew month named Adar begins on March 7.th  On that Friday, a panel of judges will visit each Homeroom classroom to determine which Homeroom has created the most festive door. Why the door to the classroom?  It is a pun.  Since the super fun holiday of Purim occurs in the month of Adar, we say that "The One who brings in the month of Adar, brings in joy", and this slogan in Hebrew sounds like the speaker is saying, "The one who enters our door, brings in joy." ("Adar" is pronounced like "our door").

Student Performance in the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP)
February 14, 2008
8 Adar I 5768
Dear Parents:

In October 2007, school districts across the state participated in the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP).  This testing program is mandated for students in grades 3 through 8 in the public schools of RI. The Jewish Community Day School of RI, along with other private and independent schools, is not mandated to administer these tests.  However, a decision was made by the JCDS administration to have students in grades 3 and 8 participate in order to gather baseline data on our academic performance in the areas tested.  MORE

New Faculty Member in Grade 1
We are pleased to announce that Debra Nassau will be joining the First Grade classroom as of February 26th.  She will be spending approximately 10 hours per week in the classroom along with Mrs. Cicchitelli to help strengthen the reading and writing skills of the students, as we continue to move forward in our commitment to individualized learning and differentiated instruction. Debra holds a Master's Degree in Education and has over 15 years of experience and training in Differentiated Learning and Instruction. Please join us in welcoming Debra to JCDS! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Cicchitelli or Betsy Singer Cable at 751-2470.

2nd Annual JCDSRI Camp Fair - A great success!
camp fairThank you to all the parents and students who helped make our 2nd Jewish Summer Camp Fair such a tremendous success.  Last Thursday, February 7, JCDS welcomed 10 camps from across New England who displayed their camps and programs in the lobby and the Pre K classroom.  One parent of a potential first-time camper described her son as "apprehensive about sleep-away camp.  At the JCDSRI camp fair he really enjoyed visiting each booth, chatting with the camp directors and collecting brochures and CD's.  It has been a fun family activity to go over all the materials and pick a camp for this summer.  Now, instead of feeling fearful, my son is having trouble picking only one camp to attend!" (name withheld by request).   Participating camps included: Camp Avoda, Mass;   Camp Gan Israel, RI;   Camp Ramah, Mass;    JCC, RI;  Union of Reform Judaism Camps - Eisner, Crane Lake, Mass;   Camp JORI, RI;   JCC Maccabi Camp Kingswood, Maine;   Camp Laurelwood, CT;   BJE Gift of Israel Program;   Camp Bauercrest.
For information about how to contact any of the above camp programs, contact Naomi Stein at nstein@jcdsri.org

Egyptian Museum at JCDS

eg largeSixth Grade students created an "Ancient Egyptian Artifacts Museum." The museum was a culmination of Social Studies, Language Arts and an Art project under Lisa Bergman's direction.  Students choose topics of their own interests and researched such things as papyrus, mummification, amulets, sacred animals, shrines, weapons, tombs, pyramids, toys and Egyptian make up. Many classes toured the museum and talked with the exhibit presenters. Lisa noted that the students had so much fun they did not even realize how hard they were working! Great work!

Watch Out CSI!

finger printsWatch out CSI, here come our Third Grade forensic scientists! These sleuths have learned to classify fingerprints. By using just a pencil and a piece of tape, students were able to complete a fingerprint chart of their fingers. The students were taught about the Galton characteristics of fingerprints and became familiar with the terms: fork, dot, ending ridge, enclosure, and short ridge. In cooperative learning groups, the students analyzed a print and shared their results. Then they were given an index card with a fellow classmates print on it. However, each card was identified by a number, not by a student name. Only the teacher knew whose print it was. Our young scientists were to identify all of the characteristics of the fingerprints and successfully hunt for the matching index cards! Very impressive! Alisa Amaral

What's the Scoop?

scoop papThird Grade's Step- up Visit with Grade 4 centered on an activity called "What's the Scoop?" Students gathered in grade-mixed groups and shared book review "scoops" while enjoying bowls of ice cream "scoops." Students were delighted to learn that some of their favorite books were also known to students in both classes. Thank you to Lori Lowinger for scoop momhelping. Step-Up experiences involve students visiting and interacting with students and teachers in the grade they will be promoted to next year.

JCDS Breakfast Cafe
break joeyYes, it is true. JCDS had a "Breakfast Café" where kindergarten students ordered their selections in Hebrew from a Hebrew menu. Cheese and eggs ביצהוגבינה   anyone? After the meal, the children sang a breakfast song and said Birkat Hamazon (Grace after the Meal). This was the culminating activity for their Breakfast Unit with Geveret Eskovitz.

Spotlight on the World Premier of OurJCDS Puppet Show
pup alecLights, Camera, Action!  On February 7, Grade 1 presented an original puppet show.  The puppets, designed in the Art Studio with Jen Bend, are animals made out of clay, fabric, paint and cardboard cones. The play involved the themes of their Community Workers Unit. "Together students brainstormed ideas about the plot, setting, characters and props. They wanted a haunted house. a missing jewel and a stair case with a trap door," explained Michelle Cicchitelli and Jen Bend, their teachers. The students made a spooky haunted house backdrop painting, a creepy candelabrum with cobwebs, and "the brilliant jewel."  Jonathan Elyashiv '09 and Daniel Katz '09, and their "talking skull puppet" were the narrators. Victoria Volynsky '09 was the understudy.  Dani Steiner noted the excellent integration of reading, writing, performing and creating along with collaborating with MS students. Iway   pup1
How Not to Break an Egg- MS Visiting Engineer
egg guestAllison Bedwinek, a Jewish mechanical engineer, came to visit the Middle School Science classes on January 28, 2008. Ms. Riffle and Ms. Bedwinek met this summer on a flight to Israel. Ms. Bedwinek explained her job as an engineer, showed some projects she has worked on that included a singing and dancing Elmo and discussed the similarities between the engineering design process and the Scientific Method. Students were then given a task: drop an egg down the stairwell without breaking it upon impact. The catch: they had only fifteen minutes to use ten packing peanuts, ten straws, two pieces of paper, a meter of tape and a clementine to do so! Three out of the sixteen designs proved successful. This was an enjoyable and enlightening experience for all. Thanks Ms. Bedwinek! Elana Riffle

Our Basketball Teams
basketball Feb 15With 3 games left in the season, the girl's Middle School basketball team is on a monster winning streak. They've won their last six games, against Providence Country Day School, Block Island School, Gordon School, Barrington Christian Academy, Wheeler "B," and West Bay Christian Academy. The whole Middle School enjoyed the Block Island games as classes were let out for the afternoon. The teams made sure that the spectators were entertained. The boys played a good game (although losing in the end), and the JCDS girls team won 30-9. The girl's team has now won 10 games!     Leah Tinberg '08, Sports Reporter
