Seder Plates-Made with Love |
|
Seder plates decorated with spring
colors were made by Kindergarten and Kitta Aleph
(Grade1). Kindergarten made three dimensional
plates with each item elevated. A special
vegetarian plate was made with the traditional
shank bone replaced by a beet. Kitta Aleph's
plates have individual plastic bowls for each
item. Beautiful Work! Rivka Eskovitz |

Grade 4 Pesah Activities- "Match
Card" Game
|
|
In
preparation for Pesah, Grade Four
will be focusing on learning the
"how to" of the Seder, and some
Haggadah selections for the 15 parts
of the Seder. As we learn, we will
be reviewing using a Pesah "Match
Card" game. To integrate Pesah
preparations with General Studies,
students will be writing a piece
called "Walls of Water" in which
students remember when they
themselves crossed the Red Sea. At
our final event on Wednesday, April
16, we will go through the 15 parts
of the Seder that we will have
learned, using sections from the
Haggadah interspersed with questions
from the match card game. The
highlight will be sharing our Walls
of Water essays as part of the Magid
(recounting) section of the Seder.

OUR PURIM
EXTRAVAGANZA - THANK YOU TO ALL! |
The
First Annual JCDSRI Purim
Extravaganza was truly phenomenal!
The students were greeted as they
arrived at school on Purim day by a
JCDSRI lobby transformed into the
ancient city of Shushan. Wait,
doesn't that poster of the
politician Mordecai tacked to the
city wall resemble our Mr. Jablow?
Hmmm. Continue

How Laura Mernoff Created
Shushan Square at JCDS |
|
After being invited to work on
the lobby by Rabbi Levine I developed my
vision. I proposed transforming the
front lobby of JCDS into Shushan Square
or outside the gates of the Shushan
Palace. In this scenario, Joy
involuntarily was transformed into the
gate keeper for the Palace. I measured
different areas of the lobby and
developed separate paintings that would
fit into their particular location.

Purim Dinner Centerpieces |
|
Purim
masks were created by the Middle School
Arts Elective for centerpieces at the
Purim dinner. Each student made two
masks and a base to support the masks.
Thank you for your unique art work!

Fifth Grade's Rat |
|
Stop
by and see the rat skeleton we
assembled. Yes, we made a rat
skeleton. How did we find enough rat
bones to make this skeleton? In our
Food Web and Energy Flow science
unit we learned that owls are
carnivorous hunters who prey on
rodents and small birds. The owls
swallow their prey whole but cannot
digest the bones, teeth, fur, and
feathers so they eventually
regurgitate it in the form of
pellets. When dissecting an owl's
pellets, many bones were found that
we classified and constructed into
an entire rat skeleton. Stop by and
see our "rat" and a project
explanation by Rachel Nassau ('11).
Fifth graders love science!

Self-Portraits |

Using painted paper, material
and colored papers, Fourth Grade
students learned to cut and tear shapes
out of the paper to create themselves.
Fabulous Work! |

Welcome Yael Krieger, our Pardes
Intern |
We welcome
Yael Krieger, Pardes Intern and
granddaughter of our beloved community
members Seymore Krieger z"l and
Cele. From March 24-April 11 she will
be teaching Humash and other text
related materials in Grades 4, 5 and 6
and assisting Marcia Kaunfer and Rabbi
Mitchell Levine. Please join us in
welcoming her. If you would like to host
Yael, please contact Marcia Kaunfer or
Rabbi Levine at 401.751.2470.
The Pardes program is a two-year
graduate program in Jerusalem in which
students study traditional Jewish texts,
Hebrew language and pedagogy. As part
of this program, students complete a
three week student teaching experience
in North America.
Info on PardesYael
Krieger is doing a unit focusing on the
ten plagues. In today's lesson students
were given the challenge of looking for
patterns in the plagues. To introduce
the lesson, she played a fascinating
"rap" that was filled with specific
references to details about the
plagues. It really grabbed the attention
of the students!

Time Travel-Transportation for the Year
2035 |
|
The
students in Grade Three had an
amazing Social Studies/Language Arts
project to conquer. They had to
imagine they were living in the year
2035 and worked for a transportation
design firm. Their job was to create
an original design of a form of
transportation that combined two
different modes into one device. The
students were required to make a
sketch of the device, list the
advantages and disadvantages of the
design, write a detailed paragraph
on how it works, build a model of
the device, and present the project
to the class. Very Creative!
|
|
M&M
Math-Yum! |
|
After
completing a unit on geometry we
immediately started a discussion of
fractions. Using M&Ms, students made
edible lines of symmetry which is
one of the concepts they studies.
Then they used the colorful M&Ms to
better understand the idea of
fraction of a set/part of a whole.
It certainly was a sweet experience!
