Yankee Doodle Went to
Town |

Fifth
Grade students concluded their
Revolutionary War Unit with
presentations of their research
on important figures of the
Revolutionary period. Students
used various resources such as
encyclopedias, books, and the
Internet, and prepared a
bibliography. Their reports were
presented on a "pop-up page" as
seen here. Mrs. Rafail was
delighted with her students'
high interest in learning about
the Revolutionary War, which
resulted in exceptional
projects. Great job Grade 5! |

A Welcome Back Surprise! |
Our
talented Laura Mernoff(Rachel'10
& Gabe'13) has continued the
happy sunny colors and designs
she painted on our storage
container to the back wall of
the playground. What a stunning
effect! You may remember that
Laura's inspiration is a mural
at a 50s era motel in San
Francisco called the Hotel del
Sol."I do have some other plans
for the outside. I am working
on a series of welded panels to
go over the chain link fence
(next to the sidewalk). Each
panel is 4 X 4 feet, so ten
panels would go the length of
the forty foot long fence. The
first two 4x4 panels were hung
today. One of them is a
torch-cut depiction of the
school logo in steel, and the
second one uses imagery from the
murals." Laura, please continue
your magic! Thank you!

Science Wizards-Grade 3
at the Museum of Science |
|
Aaron and Mark
Third
Grade went to the Boston
Museum of Science to
conclude their Simple
Machines Unit. Students
participated in a Design
Challenge that required the
students to create a bobsled
with a variety of materials.
The goal was to get the
fastest or slowest time down
the ramp. "The bobsled we
made went the fastest,
twice," said Aaron and Mark.
The students
also spent time
observing the many types of
simple machines in the
museum.

Legs, Legs, Give Me Some Legs! |

graders are observing and
taking care of tadpoles.
They are fascinated by their
growth and are anxiously
waiting to see legs soon.
Students have been
thoughtfully pursuing
answers to their own
questions in an
inquiry-based unit on frogs.
Frog projects will include a
research-based writing
report and a class newspaper
that will hopefully be
distributed school wide!

PLAY
BALL! |
The
JCDS baseball team has begun
practice! They have been
practicing for a few weeks now,
on the field behind the JCC. The
team consists of both MS
students and fifth graders. It
has been a great experience for
all involved, and the fifth
graders get another view of MS.
The MS students, many playing on
the team for their second or
third year, are simply enjoying
playing again. The team had a
game scheduled for Monday, April
28, against Community Prep, but
it was canceled because of the
rain. Feel free to cheer on the
home team at any of their games!

Grade 4 Pesah Activities- "Match
Card" Game
|
|
In
preparation for Pesah, Grade Four
will be focusing on learning the
"how to" of the Seder, and some
Haggadah selections for the 15 parts
of the Seder. As we learn, we
will be reviewing using a Pesah
"Match Card" game. To
integrate Pesah preparations with
General Studies, students will be
writing a piece called "Walls of
Water" in which students remember
when they themselves crossed the Red
Sea. At our final event on
Wednesday, April 16, we will go
through the 15 parts of the Seder
that we will have learned, using
sections from the Haggadah
interspersed with questions from the
match card game. The highlight
will be sharing our Walls of Water
essays as part of the Magid
(recounting) section of the Seder.

OUR PURIM
EXTRAVAGANZA - THANK YOU TO ALL! |
The
First Annual JCDSRI Purim
Extravaganza was truly phenomenal!
The students were greeted as they
arrived at school on Purim day by a
JCDSRI lobby transformed into the
ancient city of Shushan. Wait,
doesn't that poster of the
politician Mordecai tacked to the
city wall resemble our Mr. Jablow?
Hmmm. Continue
|
|
How Laura Mernoff Created
Shushan Square at JCDS |
|
After being invited to work on
the lobby by Rabbi Levine I developed my
vision. I proposed transforming the
front lobby of JCDS into Shushan Square
or outside the gates of the Shushan
Palace. In this scenario, Joy
involuntarily was transformed into the
gate keeper for the Palace. I measured
different areas of the lobby and
developed separate paintings that would
fit into their particular location.

Fifth Grade's Rat |
|
Stop
by and see the rat skeleton we
assembled. Yes, we made a rat
skeleton. How did we find enough rat
bones to make this skeleton? In our
Food Web and Energy Flow science
unit we learned that owls are
carnivorous hunters who prey on
rodents and small birds. The owls
swallow their prey whole but cannot
digest the bones, teeth, fur, and
feathers so they eventually
regurgitate it in the form of
pellets. When dissecting an owl's
pellets, many bones were found that
we classified and constructed into
an entire rat skeleton. Stop by and
see our "rat" and a project
explanation by Rachel Nassau ('11).
Fifth graders love science!
