Winkler's Fifth Grade JS class is inviting everyone

**(Video) Second Grade's Chumash Ceremony
|

Listen to Students Sing
On Tuesday, May
13th, the second graders of the Jewish Community
Day School received their Chumashim (Bibles)
during their milestone event. Under the
direction of their Judaic Studies teacher Susan
L. Adler, the students sang songs and learned
how to read the Days of Creation in the
traditional Torah Trope. When the students
received their Chumash, their parents and
grandparents were called up and the Chumash was
passed from generation to generation. It was a
special event for all who attended.

Six Generations Of Quilting |
Third
Grade students made a quilt rectangle using fabric
based on their own designs after studying the quilts
of Gee's Bend. Gee's Bend(Boykin, AL) is a poor,
small, isolated and unique African-American
community near Selma, Alabama. In 2002, the
African-American women of this community brought
international attention to Gee's Bend quilts noting
the art of their asymmetrical geometric patterning
used by at least six generations. They welcome quilt
supplies.

Pre-K's
Contribution to Our Kehillah (Community)
|
The
Pre-K class is pleased to announce that we are
creating a garden in the front of our school. We
have spent much of the year learning about
seeds, bulbs, annuals, perennials, healthy soil
and the weather. Our garden provides us with the
opportunity to plan and build a garden,
experiment with different plants, beautify our
school and play in the dirt!! We want to
especially thank Laura Mernoff for providing us
with beautiful wood fences and decorations,
Linda Fleischer for helping to plan the garden,
Bar Salman for digging out the weeds and Peter
Smith for the heavy lifting! Thank you also to
Lucille Andolfo for the donation of a compost
bin (which will enable us to learn about
decomposition, recycling and renewable resources
all at once!). Our garden is truly a community
effort!

Cereal Box Book
Jackets |
|

For our latest
book review format, Fourth Grade students
covered a cereal box and designed a new jacket
for their selected book. They attached a
modified book review form on the "flap" and a
short summary inside the box. Good Job! In the
library Matthew Warshay enthusiastically shared
his review of Replay by Creech, a story
within a story about a large active Italian
family. During Library classes students are
listening to an audio CD of Replay
while munching on Italian cookies.
