The Blessing of a Routinue
This coming Monday marks the
beginning of a four-week period
without any school breaks. You will
probably agree with me that after
this "full-of-holidays" September,
it will be a blessing, but also a
challenge. For some of the children
it will be hard to adjust to a
regular routine, while for others it
will be just what they need. The
Jewish culture, which often focuses
on holidays and celebrations, also
embraces the daily and weekly
routines in many ways such as daily
services, weekly torah readings or
parashot, and blessings over the
meals. The book of Vayikra explains
in detail about the routine of
building and folding the Mishkan -
the tabernacle. As adults we are
used to routines. For some of us,
it is a comfort zone; this is where
we feel safe. Others are in a
constant search as to how to escape
them. But we all have to deal with
routine. This is part of our lives
as members of a modern western
society. Let us use this month - as
parents as well as educators - to
teach our children "to make the best
of it."
Routines are important, especially
for children, for several reasons:
They provide an opportunity to work
on organizational skills, day by
day, week by week, taking one step
at a time and improving. A detail
forgotten yesterday will be
remembered today and included
tomorrow. There is opportunity
within the process that leads to
success.
Consider how routines are related to
developmental learning. Learning is
walking a path. If there are too
many stops on the way - the big
picture becomes unclear. Coming back
to the same material day by day,
reflecting on yesterday's material,
learning something new, and taking
time to "digest," increases our
understanding. We encourage our
students to develop perspectives,
visions and philosophies about the
world. This takes time, depth, and
knowledge. A good routine is
frequently the right framework to
put things together and make it
happen.
I hope these few, short lines will
make the coming weeks as enjoyable
as possible!

Charlie Samdperil
Tribute |
|
From left to right, David and Hope

Mel Alperin
On September 30,
2007, over 300 people, young, old,
Conservative, Orthodox, Reform,
Jews/non-Jews, Rhode Islanders and those
from afar, gathered to celebrate the
life of Charlie Samdperil. The Jewish
Community Day School hosted the event
with the support of the Temple Emanu-El
and the Jewish Federation of Rhode
Island.
The evening was filled with memories of
Charlie's dedication to strengthening
our future. In his memory, the First
Annual Charles Samdperil Award for
Outstanding Dedication to Jewish
Education was presented to honorees,
Patty and Mel Alperin & David and Hope
Hirsch.
Additionally, the Charles Samdperil
Educational Technology Endowment Fund
was officially established at the Jewish
Community Day School. This fund will
allow JCDSRI to create and implement a
long-term plan for technological
improvement for their students.
Donations are still being accepted.
Thank you to
everyone who helped with this event
including Mrs. Bend, Art teacher, for
displaying student art work and our JCDS

3rd Grade Family Sukkah Building
|
|
"Taking Out the
Staples" Photo by Alicia Blazer '13
-Photography Club
The 3rd Graders built the school
Sukkah this year. This tradtion was
started last year when JCDS begun.
It was a wonderful sight watching
parents, students, and staff members
build the Sukkah together. It
exemplified one of the missions of
the school which is Kehilah,
community. Many classes visited the
Sukkah for snack time and special
stories. Some staff members ate
their lunches there as well. Todah
Rabah Kitah Gimel! Kol Kakavod!
Susan Adler
From the 3rd graders: "I liked the
drill stuff. There were lots of
tools. I used a hammer. My Mom
brought a bag of tools and we worked
hard taking out all the staples. It
was lots of fun making paper
chains. I loved making the paper
chains. We made the longest chain.
We think it was 65 feet. We all had
fun!"

Beautification
Committee-Storage Container Art |
|
Laura Mernoff and her Design
Why paint the storage container?
"The children are
in the parking lot frequently so,
naturally, I began to consider how to
beautify that area first. The storage
container was covered with
graffiti. After some tinting and primer
mixing and I covered the graffiti
with this lovely color. I remembered a
mural I saw last summer at the Hotel del
Sol, a 50s era motel in San Francisco
and had a friend take some photos.
Voila! When I gridded out the photo in
quarter-inch scale, the picture was
exactly 40 feet long, the same
dimensions as the storage container.
Clearly a "meant-to-be" situation. The
summer like weather has helped me to
continue working in prime conditions."

The Parent Association
financially supports our field
trips-Thank you!
This is a photo of 5th Graders on a
tour of historic Benefit Street.
After reading
Something Upstairs by Avi, Grade
5 visited this area as it is the
setting of the novel. On the tour we
saw the house where the family and
ghost lived. Avi, the author, lived
in this house when he wrote the
book. Under a beautiful sunny sky,
we walked the streets mentioned in
the story to downtown Providence.
Along the way we learned about
Colonial American architecture and
the history of Providence. An al
fresco lunch completed our literary
adventure! Karolyn White, Librarian

Our Soceer Team-Go! Team! Go! |

"Hannhah Meharg '08 in Action"
The Middle
School co-ed soccer team plays
several times a week. When they are
not playing, they are practicing
everyday of the week except for
Friday, of course.
Their most
recent game was Tuesday, October 9,
2007 when they played the all-boys
Moses Brown team. After team-led
stretches, both teams were eager to
play. For the first 10 minutes or
so, both JCDS and Moses Brown showed
great offensive and defensive
skills. However, soon after that,
the JCDS team got through Moses
Brown's defense and 7th
grader Hannah Meharg came extremely
close to scoring a goal. Halfway
through the first half, the score
was still 0-0 and neither team
looked like they would be giving up
any goals any time soon. To further
prove this, seventh grader Daniel
Katz, goalie for the JCDS team, made
an impressive save soon after JCDS
made another goal attempt. Defense
took over again for the rest of the
half and when the whistle blew for
halftime, it was still 0-0.
When
the second half began, both teams
appeared tired. But JCDS battled
through and managed to hold off
Moses Brown until the middle of the
second half when Moses Brown was
able to score a goal. They followed
this up with a second goal a few
minutes later. But with serge of
energy JCDS came to life and played
with great vigor during the last
seven minutes of the game. They came
close to scoring a few goals, but in
the end Moses Brown came out
victorious. The game ended in a 2-0
loss for JCDS. When asked about the
team, eighth grade spectator
Daniella Levine said, "They have
tons of spirit and I always enjoy
watching them play." Leah Tinberg
