JCDS Has a New Curriculum Coach
Grade 3 Math Class-As an introduction/review of subtraction, the students had a mini science lesson! We weighed apples, plums, and grapes on a pan balance. There was discussion about what would happen to the fruit if we let it sit out for a few days. After a few days we weighed our fruit, reviewed our predictions, and found the difference between the two weights of each fruit. Also, the class discussed the process behind regrouping with 3-digit numbers and how to use addition to check subtraction.

Michelle Cicchitelli                      Lucille Andolfo                                Nicole Dunn

This year the JCDS staff is delighted to have Lucille Andolfo working with them as our Curriculum Coach.  Lucille is a 34-year veteran educator whose has been a science teacher, department head, university professor, Fellow at the RI Department of Education, professional developer/workshop presenter, technology trainer, and curriculum director.

Lucille's goals for the year are to work in collaboration with faculty to complete a comprehensive math curriculum that includes a system of benchmark assessments.  Along with other data, these assessments will be used to monitor the success of the program at JCDS and the students' achievement in math.  When this has been completed, Lucille will work with the faculty on a second curricular area following a similar process as for math.  Lucille will also have the opportunity to work with teachers in classrooms, in a coaching model that will enhance curriculum, instruction, and student success.

When I asked Lucille about her first month at JCDS she said, "I am happy to be able to share my knowledge and expertise with the JCDS faculty and staff, and it is a pleasure to work with them all.  The children put a smile on my face each day!"  Nicole Dunn, Coordinator of Lower School.

JCDSRI is proud to have implemented the Tal Am Hebrew language program in 1st grade this year. Our teacher, Mrs. Rivka Eskovitz and our Hebrew Coordinator, Ruti Adler attended an intensive training program. Mrs. Eskovitz also visited a school that has several years of experience with Tal Am, in order to become qualified to implement this exciting program for us. Tal Am is a cutting edge approach to multi-sensory, interactive language learning. Quickly becoming a Day School standard, Tal Am is now taught in 355 schools worldwide.
Tal Am was designed by a team of expert educators and researchers under the leadership of Tova Shimon, a Covenant Award recipient. Founded upon the principles of language development and learning patterns, this program nurtures Jewish children to become literate in the Hebrew language and equipped with the knowledge, skills and commitment they need to live vibrant Jewish lives. In addition to textbook work, students use music, games and visual aids to learn the Hebrew language and to develop a keen understanding of Jewish concepts and values.
The implementation of Tal Am is a hallmark of excellence in a Jewish Day school today. JCDSRI is proud to join a host of prestigious schools that have also chosen this program as their Hebrew curriculum. Although we have long excelled in Hebrew language education under the direction of our superb Ruti Adler, we believe that our students will benefit enormously from being a part of this internationally recognized program. Tal Am
Rabbi Mitchell Levine, Director of Judiac Studies
Mrs. Eskovitz comments, " This is a very exciting and creative program. The children are very enthusiactic about it. I like the wonderful songs that reinforce the lessons. We are looking forward to our first year with Tal Am."

Yum! Hot Lunch Days

lunch 2

JCDS is proud to offer a nutritious and delicious (and environmentally friendly) hot lunch program three times a week!  Rhode Island Kosher caterer, Deb Blazer, owner of Accounting for Taste, is our fabulous chef.  The program has received high ratings from Kids First, an organization working to improve nutrition in schools. A Kids First independent reviewer who recently visited the JCDS lunch program had this to say: "A highly skilled chef in the kitchen. Students enjoy the food. Students loved seeing the parents serving in the lunchroom. The offerings at this school are healthy. Many products are handmade like chicken pot pie. If students are still hungry, they can have more salad or fruit; this is an excellent policy." Kids First

The Parent Association

 pumpkins

The Parent Association financially supports our field trips-Thank you!
In conjunction with their unit on Fall, PreK and Kindergarten traveled to Schartner Farms on October 16.  We had a great time on a hay ride and saw lots of interesting things on the farm.  There were many different kinds of vegetables growing, including tomatoes and peppers.  We especially like visiting with two pigs, which we named Wilbur and Piggy.  A new friend we made was the scarecrow who waved at us. The best part of the day was picking our own pumpkins! Amy Stein

The week of October 15, 2007 was not the best for the JCDS soccer team. With the sixth graders away at Camp Teva the team had to play with fewer players than normal (despite volunteer players from the Middle School). The three games played that week all resulted in losses for the JCDS Middle School soccer team. The first game was a home game (played at the JCC field) vs. Gordon. It was the team's first game without the sixth graders so understandably it was hard for them to adjust (and, the fact that they were only playing with 9 rather than 15 players didn't help either). Ruben Litmanovich scored JCDS's only goal in the team's loss. The second game was played on Tuesday of that week and it was also a home game. JCDS was playing against a highly experienced all-boys San Miguel soccer team and lost, 5-0. The third and last game of that week was an away game at West Bay Christian Academy (WBCA). Despite fine efforts by defense and offense, the final score was 2-0. Thus completes another exhausting week for the JCDS soccer team. Leah Tinberg '08  Soccer Schedule
