Embracing the Individualism of
JCDS Students
As the Jewish Community Day School of
Rhode Island continues to move forward in its mission to
provide differentiated instruction to students in order
to optimize each individual student's potential, we want
to let you know about a team of specialized staff
members within our school community.
The Learning Support Team, consisting
of Linda Gagnon, Pam Levanos, and Betsy Singer Cable
strives to help students, parents and teachers identify
and clarify any learning, emotional, behavioral or
social issues which may be having an impact on a
student's ability to be successful at school.
Linda, Pam, and Betsy work individually and with small
groups of students, both in-and out of class to help
support identified students in whichever area(s) they
may be struggling. The Learning Support Team serves as a
function of the larger "team", which includes teachers,
parents, and other service providers as appropriate,
which surrounds each student at JCDS.
Learning Team
Two or three times a year, the Homeroom Teacher of each
grade chairs the Learning Team Meeting which includes
all the teachers who interact with the individual
students in that particular class, along with the
Learning Support Team, in order to create a complete
assessment of each and every student in the school. The
team will review reports and discuss the student's
progress and how best to enhance the learning process
with each individual student.
Multi-Disciplinary Team
When a more complex situation arises during the
Learning Team meeting, or if an urgent concern has
unexpectedly arisen, the student will be referred to the
Multi-Disciplinary Team. The Chair of this team is the
Director of Student Support Services. The Team may
include, but is not limited to, the Homeroom Teacher,
the Coordinator of Lower School or Middle School, the
Head of School, the parents/guardians, the student and
other internal and/or external service providers who may
be involved with the student. Parents may also initiate
a meeting of the Multi-disciplinary Team to address a
special need of the child in consultation with the
Director of Student Support Services. The
Multi-Disciplinary Team can meet as often about a
student as the need to do so indicates.
Parent/Teacher Conferences
Successful educational outcomes are based on a
partnership between teachers and parents. Therefore,
JCDS seeks to create an ongoing dialogue with our parent
body concerning a student's educational progress and any
issues that need addressing. The semi-annual
parent/teacher conferences are a chance for parents to
discuss your child's program with his or her teacher and
raise any questions or concerns you may have. Betsy

Magic! The Creation of
Ela-Fly |
|
Mary Jane Begin paints a
creature from a squiggle made by Jacob Katzman.
During our Reading and Art Celebration local illustrator
Mary Jane Begin visited our school. There were looks and
sounds of awe as we viewed her early childhood art work.
"Her grade 1 art looks good, like a grade I. But the owl
drawing she did in grade 2, well it was like a MS
student," said Daniel Karlin. Indeed one can easily tell
Mary Jane was destined to paint. Students intently
listened to her tips on techniques and shading. We
agreed that her painted animal eyes with beautiful
translucent colors are dazzling. We were thrilled to
learn some "inside" knowledge such as her daughter was
the model for a character as well as her dogs. But most
exciting was when she asked a volunteer to draw a
squiggle and began creating a magical mythical creature
right before our eyes! Sandy Gamm and Jessica Nassau
named the being Ela-Fly, who is on display in the Art
Studio. Ask your child what they saw and heard. Karolyn

Signed books by Mary Jane are available for purchase
in the library and can be further personalized with your
child's name. A great Hanukkah gift! Posters are also
available

READING and ART WEEK
CELEBRATION |
Thank you to everybody, and
most especially our wonderful volunteers, who assisted with
our Scholastic Book Fair and Art Exhibit! Special thanks to
Laura Mernoff and Donna Goldin for helping Jen Bend hang the
2-D work and display the 3-D work. Special thanks to Nicole
Katzman of the PJ Library for her display and participation.
Over 70 people helped with the
Book Fair. A special thank you to the large crew that set-up
and the Usher, Poirier, Sholes and Blazer families, who
skillfully broke-down the Fair. Because of your efforts we
sold approximately $3,700.00 worth of merchandise! Your
children will soon be enjoying many new library books. Thank
you to the families who participated in the Class Wish
Program. Thank you to our crowd of approximately two-hundred
people who attended our fun-filled Family Night with
Clifford. Bravo to our talented star, Max. Congratulations
to David Herzberg-Mayer, the winner of the Gobstoppers
Contest. See you next year! Karolyn

Alan
Shawn Feinstein Visits JCDS |
WE ARE A FEINSTEIN LEADERSHIP SCHOOL!
On October 18th, Alan Shawn Feinstein came to visit our
school. He spoke to our students and told them how proud he
is about each and every one. We are a Feinstein Leadership
School. He told the students that they would each get a
membership card stating that they are Feinstein Junior
Scholars. By doing good deeds, we are making the world a
better place. Susan Adler
Calling All Good Deed Doers!
Have you done a good deed this year that you would like
to share with others? Please let Sue Adler know. She is
our Feinstein Coordinator and she would love to
publicize all of the wonderful things that our students
are doing. No act of kindness is too small to mention.
Please e-mail her at sadler@jcdsri.org or speak to her
at school. In January, Sue writes a Feinstein Newsletter
that is sent to all who are connected to the school and
especially to Mr. Alan Shawn Feinstein.information

After School
Clubs-Photography Club |
|

For nine years JCDS has
offered an Afterschool Program. Our Fall programs included
the Photography Club, a Study and Organizational Skills
Workshop, Israeli Dancing and the Book Buddies Club. New
programs will be offered in January.
The
Photography Club meets on Mondays from 3:30 to 4:30 pm.
Students are learning the basics about their 35mm cameras:
focus, aperture, depth of field and composition. Photographs
taken by the students are based on assignments as well as
individual experimentation. Some of the topics we have
explored are: light and shadow, point of view, and photos of
letters found in everyday objects that make up your
name. Selected student work is posted on the school website.

Trip Fundraiser |
"Change
Can Be For The Good"
The 8th graders have placed a large water bottle in
the JCDS front lobby, which will be used to collect loose
change as part of their fundraising efforts toward the
Israel Trip in the Spring. Please participate by emptying
your pockets and your wallets of any loose change and
dropping it into the bottle. For you, it is just a small
drop in the bucket, but if everyone participates, we hope
that it will become a full bucket. Thank you for your help
in this endeavor and in supporting your fellow members of
the JCDS community. Rabbi Gouze |
