| Grade K Parents Volunteer for "Big Centers Time"and More! |
|
Big Centers are a lot of fun our kindergartners as well as our volunteers. On some Friday mornings we invite two parents to volunteer in our classroom from 9:45-11:10. The class is divided into four teams (orange, yellow, blue and green). If you walk down the hallway at the right moment you will hear each of the teams cheering for their color in English and Hebrew. After we cheer, the learning and the fun begin with four learning and/or crafting centers. Each team visits all four centers which are facilitated either by a teacher, a parent, or another volunteer from our JCDS Community. Each group rotates from one station to the next until all groups have visited all stations. Each station is about fifteen minutes long.
Centers include ABC's, math, reading/poetry, and arts & crafts; usually focusing on a common theme - our focus letter or sight words, a holiday or a particular area of study. Big Centers are special because the children are able to work on four projects that are challenging and fun with a small group of peers.
Big Centers is one of our volunteer opportunities. In addition, Brian Mayer led tefillah and Jackie Satlow read a story. Upcoming volunteer projects include: Barbara Fields will help us celebrate Chinese New Year; Leslie Bostom is helping with our 5 senses unit by talking about skin; Dan Gamm is going to help with a math lesson; and Jake Mahaffy is going to teach about film making.
We are thankful to those that have volunteered to help in the past, and we welcome future volunteers to join us for learning and for fun! Amy Stein

A Drop in the
Bucket-Your Change
|
|
The
8th graders have
placed a large water
bottle in the JCDS
front lobby, which
will be used to
collect loose change
as part of their
fundraising efforts
toward the Israel
Trip in the Spring.
Please participate
by emptying your
pockets and your
wallets of any loose
change and dropping
it into the bottle.
For you, it is just
a small drop in the
bucket, but if
everyone
participates, we
hope that it will
become a full
bucket. Thank you
for your help in
this endeavor and in
supporting your
fellow members of

Our Writing
Program |
|

A Peak into
Guided Writing
At JCDS, we
recognize the
importance of a
solid writing
program. After
all, reading and
writing are
complementary
processes where
learning in one
area helps
children learn
better in the
other area.
After working so
hard to
establish our
Guided Reading
program, we got
to work to
create a writing
program to help
our students
excel in writing
as well. We
came up with a
program that we
refer to as
Guided Writing,
which could also
be known as
Writer's
Workshop. We
modeled our
writing program
on the work of
Gay Su Pinnell
and Irene C.
Fountas and have
formatted it
accordingly to
work best in our
school at each
specific grade
level. Guided
Writing takes
place on average
three times a
week for grades
one through 5,
with at least
two teachers in
the
classroom. Every
writing class
begins with a
mini-lesson,
which is a short
lesson on a
specific skill.
These skills
cover a variety
of topics
including
routines during
writing
workshop,
writing
strategies and
skills, and the
craft of writing
and illustrating
when
appropriate.
This is where
the classroom
teacher models
writing for
students, shows
others' work
using children's
literature or
student work and
introduces
different genres
of writing. In
short, this is
the main formal
learning time of
Guided Writing.
When this
completed, the
children are
given the
opportunity to
work
independently.
While children
are writing, the
teachers will
conference with
students to help
them excel with
their own
specific writing
needs.
Conferences are
usually
one-on-one,
however, they
could be used as
a time to
address specific
areas with
groups of
students as
needed.
Students,
particularly in
the higher
grades, will
still continue
to follow the
pattern of the
writing process
of a rough
draft, editing,
revising and
publishing.
During the last
five to ten
minutes of
Guided Writing,
specifically in
the lower
grades, the
students have
the opportunity
to share their
writing with the
class.
This is our
third year using
this writing
format and have
found it to work
well. We
continue to
modify the
process making
changes to make
it trying to
make it as
successful as
possible. We
strongly feel
the Guided
Writing Program
has proven to
help create
students who not
only have an
appreciation for
writing, but are
skillful writers
as well. If you
haven't already
had a chance to
see your child's
writing, ask
his/her
classroom
teacher to share
a sample with
you. You are
guaranteed to be
delighted with
what you read!

A Hanukkah Tale

Once upon a
time, in old
Morocco, there was a
grand synagogue. It
was an ancient
building, one of the
oldest temples in
the world.
However, this
synagogue happened
to be built on some
of the best ground.
The ruler of that
land would be very
rich. And so it
came that Lord
Apolinar, one of the
Spanish king's most
trusted allies,
learned of this
land.Continue

ARCHITECTURE AND
DESIGN
EXHIBITION-Ends
January 19 |

The Three Sisters
café on Hope Street
was transformed into
a bright and cheery
art gallery on the
evening of December
1 for the JCDS MS
Art Show Opening.
Some 60 people,
including students,
family members,
faculty, friends and
strangers, studied
the work of the
fourteen students.
Each student has
two pieces of
work on display
at the Café: one
a
three-dimensional
model of an open
or closed office
space, and the
other a
two-dimensional
representation
of a street
scene. The
students
represented are
Esty Bharier,
Daniel Brandes,
Cameron Brenner,
Jonathan
Elyashiv, Corey
Goldstein,
Daniel Katz,
Makenna Kobrin,
Gal Reis, Bar
Salman, Jessica
Spindell, Naomi
Subotnick,
SamuelUsher,
Victoria
Volynsky, and
Madelyn Wyner.

The 6th, 7th and
8th graders have
created models
and drawings of
pragmatic,
historic,
imaginative, and
at times
otherworldly
nature,
exploring themes
ranging from
social realism
to human
engineering
(ergonomics) in
this diverse
body of
work. "Visual
arts are
important for
lower and middle
school students,
as they help
students become
more creative,"
explains Dani
Steiner, Head of
School. "They
learn to pay
attention to
detail, and that
everything they
do is
important."
The
show will
continue through
Saturday,
January 19.

Crafts Sale |

Our unique
t-shirts were very
popular. Some were
designed by local
artist Noam
Elyashiv , mom
of Jonathan '09.
The 7th
grade families
recently hosted
a Crafts Fair,
as a fundraising
effort towards
the 7th grade's
May, 2008 trip
to Washington,
DC (and as
practice for our
fundraising for
our Israel trip
next year!!).
We had a great
time preparing
the crafts as a
group on a
recent vacation
day, and were
able to make
placemats,
jewelry, t-shirt
designs,
Miriam's cups,
wall hangings,
candle holders
and scarves. We
had a great
response from
the school -
both families
and
administration,
and want to
extend our
thanks to
everyone who
supported us.
Can't wait to
see what our
amazing class
will do next!!

Do you want to be a

If
you are interested
in writing a Jewish
book then the annual
Jewish Children's
Book Writers
Conference,
co-sponsored by the
92nd Street Y

you! Karolyn White,
our librarian, has
been to two
conferences and is
very impressed with
how instructional
and motivating they
are. She notes, "Not
only are there great
presentations from
prestigious authors,
illustrators and
editors, but you get
to network with them
and have first pages
and query letters
reviewed."
Coincidentally, Neal
Waldman, the
illustrator of
Letter on the Wind
by Sarah Marwil
Lamstein, who
recently visited our
school, was a
presenter at the
November 18
conference. He
movingly described
how Sarah's story
captivated him.
Karolyn noted, "So
our library copy of
Letter on the
Wind is signed
by both the author,
Sarah Marwil
Lamstein and the
illustrator, Neal
Waldman. Now that's
a special book!

Basketball
Teams |
Both
the girl's and boy's
middle school
basketball teams
have begun their
seasons. They have
each had two games
and multiple
practices. Coach Mo
Concepcion had
prepared the teams
well, although the
boys didn't fare too
well in their first
match up. Both teams
played CVS
Highlander and the
girls had a very
successful game. The
girls played a great
game, and led for
most of the time, up
until the very end.
The game ended in a
tie. The boys,
missing a few
players, were
overmatched and
ended up losing,
55-10. The next
games, Wednesday
December 19, were
played versus West
Bay Christian
Academy. The girls
lost a very close
game and the boys
lost by the score of
35-15.
The
basketball season is
off with a bang, the
players are having
lots of fun, and it
is sure to only get
better! Leah Tinburg

Note: The
teams have many
games coming up so
come watch and
support them! The
games are after
school and the
basketball schedule
