Learning to Read
Photo: Grade 3 Guided Reading Group with Mrs. Rafail

We have been using the Guided Reading approach for the past six years. Guided Reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher working with a small group of students who are able to read texts at a similar level and are working on similar reading strategies. Skilled readers use a wide range of word-solving strategies, including analysis of sound-letter relationships and word parts.  Reading a variety of books allows the child to go from reading individual words to reading for meaning.
Guided Reading begins in the second half of the year in Kindergarten and it continues through Third Grade.  In Fourth and Fifth Grade we do what is called Transitional Guided Reading where the small group approach is still used but most of the attention "transitions" from the process of learning how to read to mainly reading for meaning. This program is a powerful way to support the development of reading strategies and has instilled the love of reading in many of our students!   More Info

Literature Circles-Super Summarizers and Vivid Visualizers
Lit Circles               A valuable addition to the 5th grade guided reading program is the use of Literature Circles by their teacher Bethany Rafail. A Literature Circle involves a small group of students who read and discuss the same work of literature. Each member of the circle agrees to take a specific responsibility which helps guide the group discussions. The circles meet regularly and the discussion roles change at each meeting. The roles include super summarizer and vivid visualizer as well as others. Literature Circles provide an opportunity for students to control their own learning; to share thoughts, concerns, and their understanding of the novel. Mrs. Rafail notes that Literature Circles are an opportunity for students to take the lead as they facilitate their own conversations, as opposed to being directed by a teacher. She reports that students have welcomed the opportunity for increased responsibility and independence in this student centered learning activity. Bethany Rafail

ZIMRIYAH, OUR SONGFEST! February 14

60 logoZimriyah 2008/ תשס"ח

February 14, 2008

7 p.m. at Temple Beth El.

We have dedicated this year's Zimriyah to the 60th Birthday of Israel! The name of Votingthe Zimriyah is 60 B'shira (shishim b'shira) which means 60 years in song.

We decided on three goals for our Zimriyah:  to choose songs that represent the cultural story of Israel (A very hard task to do in 40 minutes!), to relate our Zimriyah celebration with Israel's theme for this year, and to choose some songs that are part of our Jewish Studies and Hebrew curriculum.More infornation including our logo voting results

Peanut/tree nut Allergy Policy
Dear JCDS Parents,

We are updating you on the school's plan for implementation of Rhode Island's new "Peanut Law."  Passed during the 2007 legislative session, the purpose of the law is to protect students who have allergies to peanuts or tree nuts, while they are in school. Allergies to peanuts or tree nuts are quite common.  Some people have a mild reaction to these products, such as developing a rash or hives.  However, some people have a very severe reaction which can be life-threatening.  A person with this severe type of allergy may stop breathing (anaphylaxis) in less than a minute of smelling, eating or touching peanut/tree nut products. Creating a Sense of Place & Culture:
Grade 4  was asked to think of something that is indigenous to Rhode Island that began with a designated alphabet letter.  For instance, Nicolas Lowinger selected the "IWay" our local highway construction project for the letter "I." IwayAfter doing pencil drawings of their ideas, students made etching plates. Using brayers, barrens and ink, they experimented and pulled several prints from their plates. After selecting prints and writing text, they assembled their book. The class decided that the library would be the ideal spot to display their book because it would be easily available to all classes.  "Students are enjoying the colorful prints and discussing the Rhode Island connections," reports Mrs. White. "Thank you Grade 4. Great work!" Jen Bend, Art Teacher

Basketball Teams

basketball 1 on floorOur boys' and girls' basketball teams have been very busy! The girls' first game was Tuesday, January 8, and they played their way to their first victory, versus the Moses Brown "B" middle school team! The next day, Wednesday, January 9, both the girls' team and the boys' team lost to Community Prep, but they were both very close games. The boys' next game was against San Miguel on Thursday, January 10, and while they played their best, in the end, they suffered a loss. Happily the hard work and perseverance of both teams paid off on Tuesday, January 15. Both teams played outstandingly well against Rocky Hill. Victory was sweet when the boys got their first win of the season, and the girls, their second. They have many games coming up and hopefully, they will continue to do as well as they are doing now. I know they will!  Schedule

The Nibble and Chew Library Lunchtime Book Club
book club

Quite a crowd piled into the Library at lunchtime for our new Lunchtime Book Club for Grades 3 and 4. We are reading Fablehaven by Mull. "For centuries mystical creatures of all descriptions have gathered at Fablehaven to prevent their extinction. This sanctuary is one of the last strongholds of true magic. The dialogue snaps and sizzles..like Harry Potter..don't miss the first novel by a writer who is clearly going to be a major figure in popular fantasy," Orson Scott Card. Liz Lerman Dance Exchange Program at Brown
