Summer Reading
Yes Parents, Summer Reading
Does Help Improve Test Scores and Comprehension
More
Dear JCDSRI Families,
Welcome to our summer celebration
of books, the JCDSRI Summer Reading Program!
“Summertime and the livin’ is easy.” Yes, we slow down and relax
more in summer. Reading is a relaxing activity that allows us to
escape into literary dreams. We have developed a summer reading
program to encourage your child to read or listen to reading.
Research studies have demonstrated
that students who participate in a summer reading program are more
likely to read at their grade level or above than nonparticipating
students and those reading above grade level are more likely to
retain those skills into the next school year. (Evaluation and
Training Institute). While an increase in reading promotes reading
abilities and other skills, we also want our students to experience
the joys that reading brings through marvelous characters and
adventures. Books introduce us to friends we will have for life.
Reading is FUN!
The intent of our summer reading
program is to promote your child’s reading skills. We are asking
students to read at least three books and do a book assignment on
one book. Hopefully, they will read many books.
So, what’s good to read? Attached
are : 1. For Grades 2-4 Guided Reading Booklist with books at your
child’s current reading level and 2. For Grades 1-8 a Suggested
Booklist of various levels and interests. The Book Assignments are
included. Additional booklists and literary resources are posted on
our website in the Library section.
The Summer Reading Program is coordinated by Karolyn White,
