Students entering the fourth grade
are asked to read 3 books over the summer. Hopefully they will read
many more! Most of the listed books are available in public
libraries. Students will select an assignment from the suggested
assignments. The assignment is due the first week of school. Books
with a * are available on audiocassette or CD. More booklists on
posted on our website www.jcdsri.org Students are encouraged to use
the Library Summer Reading Record and join a public library or
bookstore summer reading program.

Do a Book Assignment on one of
the 3 books you selected. Choose the assignment you would like
to do. Books not listed cannot be used. Due the first week of
school.

for your child to read independently is attached. Your child is

Clearly describe a setting of
the story on one side. “Paint” a picture with your adjectives.
The audience should be able to picture the setting by reading
your detailed description.

2. Book Collage

Using a poster, design a
collage that represents major characters and events
in the book.

Put sentences on the collage
explaining what the art represents about
the story. For example, if a collage has an area that represents
the
sea, a few sentences are needed to explain how the sea is part
of
the story. “This story takes place by sea in Cape Cod. There are
whales
in the sea because Mike’s father owns a whale watching boat.”
Suggestions:

Use pictures and words cut from
magazines, Internet, photos, etc.

Use different types of paper
such as heavy weight, tissue paper, foil
paper, design paper, painted paper, etc.

Add 3-D effects with feathers,
sand, beads, small toys, glitter, fake
gems, small jewelry, etc.
