Jewish Community Day School of Rhode
Island Increases Technology Integration Thanks to Generous Grant
Providence, RI – February 8, 2010
The Jewish Community Day School of Rhode Island is
pleased to announce that we have expanded our technology integration
into the curriculum and are in the process of updating our equipment,
thanks to a generous grant.
Teachers are already using internet-connected
laptops in the classrooms to provide research opportunities for their
students, to clarify information, and to create documents and
presentations. Fourth grade students have used the classroom laptops to
research details for their creative writing stories, while fifth graders
have been able to research Borax and lavender for a cost-analysis of a
natural cleaning product they developed, while also using the internet
to quickly and accurately convert amounts from ounces to tablespoons.
During the school’s week-long February break, thirty
(30) new desktop computers will be installed in both the computer lab
and the classrooms. In addition, the school will be installing a new
server and other needed infrastructure upgrades. All classrooms and the
lab will also receive projectors and screens, enabling teachers to use
the computers to integrate technology into their lessons on a regular
basis. Students will be able to view Powerpoint presentations created by
their teachers, take virtual field trips that coordinate with the places
and topics they are learning about in class, and communicate with peers
and experts around the world using Skype and other voice-over internet
providers. The faculty and administration at the school are very excited
about these upcoming changes.
Irene Rudnick, Assistant Head of School, states
that, “Technology is not an add-on to the curriculum, but rather the
means to provide our teachers with innovative ways to teach and our
students with opportunities to delve more deeply into topics that
interest them. This new technology plan will enable us to continue to
offer a rich secular and Judaic studies curriculum for our students.
Technology and its proper use helps all of us be members of a global
learning community.”
Jewish Community Day School of Rhode Island is an
independent Jewish Day School located in Providence, RI. It provides a
stimulating and enriching educational environment in which students from
all Jewish traditions acquire a strong foundation in both general and
Judaic studies.
