Dear David,
We are very excited to issue the second Ma Hadash. We strongly believe that providing and sharing news and stories about the school will increase community support for Jewish Day School Education. Please help us to share these precious moments with others and spread the news. Put Jewish day school education on the map!
This time of the year we are focused on expanding the financial support to the school. I'm happy to announce two generous gifts the school was fortunate to receive in the past few weeks: an anonymous gift of $10,000 to expand our science program and an additional $10,000 from the Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation for new community service programs in our Middle School. We also launched our annual campaign- a great opportunity to involve as many community members as possible in the school family. Give online today by clicking this link: JCDS Annual Campaign
Tu Bishvat, the Jewish holiday that celebrates the nature and the environment is coming up in a few days. It is an opportunity to teach our students and ourselves on the importance of caring about the world we live in, its quality and its beauty.
I hope you enjoy reading the Ma Hadash!
Hodesh Tov, Happy new month of Shvat

In the Classroom...
Lower School
Nicole Dunn - "All About Me" in the 2nd grade
Students in the 2nd grade are practicing their writing skills by constructing paragraphs. By utilizing their personal experience and stories, about their family, friends, hobbies and more, students are creating an individualized journal with the theme "All About Me". Their stories will be placed into a binder along with their visual illustrations and all of their work will be produced into a book. A special thank you to the many parents who have been helping with editing and proof reading. 2nd grade parents will be invited in February to hear their child's "All About Me" story.
Middle School
A Hanukkah Tale written by Max Brumberg-Krause, Sylvia Catania, Anton Koudriavtsev, Daniella Levine and Dahlia Neeman, 8th Grade students, was selected as a winning entry in the Voice and Herald Hanukkah Writing Contest. Their teacher, Yardena Winkler uses writing to help students capture the essence of Jewish history and their own personal stories.

6th GRADE SIDDUR CEREMONY

Monday, Dec. 3rd, 2007, at the JCDSRI schaharit (morning) service, the 6th graders received their middle school siddurim and Tanachim (Hebrew Bibles) from Mrs. Elaine Kroll and Ms. Ellie Lewis. In recognition of the community spirit of inclusiveness, the students and their families are allowed to choose the siddur that they will use during their middle school years. This year's choices included Sim Shalom (Conservative), Artscroll (Orthodox), and Kol Haneshamah (Reconstructionist).
In presenting the siddurim, Mrs. Kroll represented Mr. Sanford Kroll, the founding president of the Alperin Schechter Day School, and Ms. Lewis presented the Tanachim
in memory of Shirley Aronson Goldberg.

JCDS at the ROCHAMBEAU LIBRARY
Karolyn White, JCDS Librarian, conducted a Hanukah story time at the Rochambeau Branch Library. The children enjoyed accompanying Kimmelman's Runaway Latkes by singing the "runaway" song and shaking paper latkes. A hanukiah was displayed as well as latkes. Special thanks to the staff of the Children's Room for letting us participate in their story time program. We had a delightful time!
Dahlia Neeman '08 and Max Brumberg-Kraus '08 helped visitors at the Rochambeau Library play the dreidel game.
Did you know that several children of the Isenberg family, benefactors of the remodeled Children's Room, are JCDS Alumni?

Board of Directors Update
Dear Community Members,
The school recently had its first Chanukah party and it was quite a success. Many parents and students attended, enjoying dinner, a brief stage show and then games and dancing to a DJ. I realized afterward that a trend has emerged: the school community has recently become particularly engaged in all-school activities. This happened, too, at the opening day Taft Avenue block party, when the street was jammed with Israeli dancing to music played by a parent band, while students proudly served hot dogs from our kosher cart, as kids, parents, faculty and administrators laughed and enjoyed each other's company. If you want to see another happy, multigenerational event, join us February 14th at 7:00 pm - Temple Beth-El for Zimriyah, the school's beloved song fest.
While our community within the school has been strongly coalescing, I feel we are still missing our friends in the larger state Community, without whom we are incomplete in fulfilling our vision of being a community day school. We want and need you to share with us the joy and nachas of our children. Recently the second grade graders sang Chanukah songs and visited with residents of Tamarisk on the 2nd day of Chanukah. Events like this one are particularly important to us, so please contact Betsy Cable at bcable@jcdsri.org if you'd like to become involved as a volunteer, or if you have an opportunity for community gathering that you'd like to share.
Oh, and do come to see some of the products of our vibrant new art program at Three Sisters Café, 1074 Hope street where the middle school currently has an art exhibit through January 19!
