Celebrate Israel's 60th Birthday!
We welcome special guests Mayor David Cicilline and

Dear David,
Shalom!
One
of
our
main
goals
at
the
school
is
to
provide
excellent
general
study
education.
Yes,
we
are
a
Jewish
day
school
that
needs
to
teach
Torah
and
Lashon
(Hebrew),
but
it
is
as
important
to
see
all
of
our
graduates
to
be
successful
at
high
school
and
college
and
to
have
a
strong
background
in
math,
language
arts
and
science.
One
important
way
to
assess
our
work
with
the
students
is
to
use
a
standardized
testing
system.
There
are
a
few
systems
which
schools
are
using,
and
we
decided
to
research
which
system
would
be
best
for
us.
Meanwhile,
we
have
already
started
with
some
testing
at
the
school
and
asked
some
of
our
classes
to
do
the
NECAP
state
test.
The
results
were
very
good.
Without
any
preparation
(we
told
the
teachers
about
it
approximately
two
weeks
before
the
tests
were
to
be
administered)
- in
comparison
to
the
5
top
schools
in
Rhode
Island,
our
average
scores
in
mathematics,
reading
and
writing,
we
were
equal
or
surpassed
the
average.
By
the
end
of
the
year
we
will
make
final
decisions
about
our
assessment
process.
Data
is
the
most
important
component
in
making
educational
decisions
regarding
the
curriculum
of
the
school.
This
will
be
another
exciting
step
towards
becoming
the
school
we
are
dreaming
of.
Hope
to
see
all
of
you
at
Zimriyah!

Steiner,

of

In the Classroom...
Lower School
Research Projects in Kindergarten
Flamingoes, elephants, dolphins and more were presented in the Kindergarten Zoo. Each student has been very busy researching and learning about his/her animal. Karolyn White, JCDS librarian, shared many books and magazines about animals. Mrs. Bend, art teacher, helped the Kindergarten class paint and draw the wearable animal collages and display. Thank you all our families for supplying the pictures. The results were "ROARING." Amy Stein - Kindergarten Teacher

Lower and Middle School
Got Science? We Do!
Simulating plate tectonics, comparing the human skeleton to a rat skeleton, creating life-size models of the solar system and testing out the periodic table through lab experiments are all in a day's work for our science teacher, Elana Riffle. "Students are encouraged to challenge themselves in science by asking questions and seeking their answers. Opening the door for students to experience hands-on how science affects our everyday is a way for me to teach the students and do my part in tikkun olam. Because I work at a Jewish day school, I can relate the scientific concepts to culture, making the transition easier for the students and the understanding one that lasts. For instance, who knew that chemistry could be linked to the Passover seder? Did you know that there are heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures as well as solutions on your table?" Passion and enthusiasm infuse her science classroom. The curriculum she created for the different classes combines text book learning, process skills and inquiry to access each student and their multiple intelligences. |
Sporting Values Both On And Off the Court
\
Once in Middle School, our students have the opportunity to participate in interscholastic sports. At present, the school offers sports for both boys and girls for each of the three seasons. In the autumn, we field a coed soccer team; during the winter, we have both girls and boys basketball teams; and in the spring we offer coed baseball.
The emphasis of the sports program is on improving sports skills and participation, sportsmanship and teamwork. It is our belief that the lessons learned on the athletic field can help prepare our students for a wide range of experiences later in life. Upon leaving JCDS a number of students continue to participate in both recreational and interscholastic sports. Over 70% of the Middle School students participate in one or more of the interscholastic sport seasons.

Parent's Association Contribution to JCDS
The PA membership organization open to all parents and works with the administration, teachers and room parents to support and create programs for the whole school community. Under the leadership of Co-Chairs, Guy Bermel and Lori Shulkin-Lowinger (pictured), cultural programming and field trips have been financially supported by this group of dedicated parents. The PA is currently working with the administration on a wonderful school-wide Purim-Shabbat Dinner on March 21st.
We Wish You All the Best - Eileen!
Dear Friends,
There are many different chapters in a person's life and the Alperin Schechter/Jewish Community Day School has been a positive, worthwhile chapter in mine for the past 15 years. Now it is time to close this chapter and move on to the next.
On Monday morning, January 28th, I gave my letter of resignation to Dani Steiner, our Head of School. I will be resigning my position as the Assistant to the Head of School on February 15, 2008.MORE

Board of Directors Update
Dear Friends:
This Thursday, February 14th, please join us for our
exciting annual celebration. The essence of the JCDS Zimriyah - Songfest is to bring our community together to sing, laugh and celebrate. This year, we will be launching the community-wide celebration in honor of Israel's 60th birthday.
We hope you will come and be a part of the excitement.
Over the past few weeks, our JCDS Board and Professionals have worked together to begin planning for the 2008-2009 school year. As tremendous partners with the Bureau of Jewish Education and the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island, we have also worked as a community to develop a plan that will strengthen our curriculum, teacher training and academic enrichment offerings and provide support to all students who wish to receive a Jewish education. We know that providing a school of excellence to our families is the most important part of what we do. I look forward to keeping you posted on our progress.
Have a wonderful and relaxing winter break.
See you at Zimriyah!
